Questioning Amit Shah, Sibal also sought to know why FIRs were not registered against those who delivered hate speeches which led to the violence.
New Delhi| Congress leader Kapil Sibal today slammed the BJP, accusing the ruling party of indulging in hate politics. Congress leader accused the Delhi Police of helping those who indulged in violence in northeast Delhi, also remarking that the violence was a result of âcommunal virusâ.
During a discussion in Rajya Sabha today, Sibal said that several BJP leaders have made provocative speeches but no FIRs have been lodged against them despite the fact that it is a clear case of a cognisable offence under the law.
Referring to home minister Amit Shah, who wasnât present in the House, during a discussion on the riots that claimed 53 lives, Sibal questioned why no FIRs had been filed despite there being evidence of some policeman aiding rioters.
“Your solicitor general told the court that it was not an opportune time to file an FIR…is there ever an opportune time to file an FIR? Please teach me the law,” Sibal quipped.
Comparing the situation in J&K with BJP leaders, Sibal said while the govt imprisoned Omar Abdulla on the ground that his release might spread violence in J&K, it has failed to take any action against those members of BJP who publicly incited people, in an apparent reference to Anurag Thakur, Parvesh Verma and Kapil Mishra.
He also raised the incident of a group of men, who were made to sing the national anthem by the police, saying that everyone, except Delhi Police, knew what was happening. One of the men had later succumbed to his injuries.
âYou can do everything to protect the cows, canât you do anything to protect human beings?â Sibal questioned the government.

âYou (Shah) are sitting on (Indiaâs first home ministerâ Sardar Patel’s seat, think about the innocent people suffering⌠Those who suffered want to know whom to look at for support,â the former Union minister said.
Sibal also rued the absence of the home minister during the crucial debate. âThe presence of the home minister would have been better,â he said.
âPeople climbed on to the terrace of the Mohan nursing home. These people were shooting with rifles. You have the picture. Did you take any action? These people were using cylinders that you give in your Ujjwala Scheme. The PM was tight-lipped for 72 hours⌠You can do anything to protect a cow but nothing will be done to protect human beings⌠very unfortunate,â Sibal added.
He said that while BJP keeps talking about Sabka Viswas, it may lose the faith of all if it continues to walk its current path.
Due to three day long riots in northeast Delhi, 53 people lost their lives. With countless houses, shops, schools, hospitals, vehicles burnt, several people are homeless and are left without even basic necessities.
