“Safety First: For the first time in 166 years, Indian Railways had zero passenger deaths in the current financial year,” said Railway Minister Piyush Goyal

New Delhi: The Indian Railways has claimed that zero passenger death was observed in the present financial year, that is, 2019-20, which is for the first time in the 166-year-long history of railways.

“Safety First: For the first time in 166 years, Indian Railways had zero passenger deaths in the present financial year,” said Railway Minister Piyush Goyal.

On December 6, the Delhi High Court has sought a response from the Central government on a plea seeking to maintain the highest standards of safety and security measures at all railways stations across India.

Last month, the Railway Ministry Piyush Goyal claimed that in order to improve safety, modern track structure consisting of Pre-stressed Concrete Sleeper (PSC), 60kg, 90 or higher Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS) rails, fan-shaped layout turnout on PSC sleepers, steel channel sleepers on girder bridges is used while carrying out primary track renewals.

Piyush Goyal also said that ultrasonic flaw detection (USFD) testing of rails to detect flaws and timely removal of defective rails are carried out to avoid incidents of derailments and to improve the safety of the railway tracks.

Apart from this, drives and inspections at regular intervals are carried out to monitor and educate staff for the observance of safe practices, Piyush Goyal said.

“Don’t destroy public property” urges PM Modi to UP protesters

PM Modi said public property which was targetted during such agitation is for the use of citizens, including those indulging in violence and arson

Lucknow: On Wednesday Prime Minister Narendra Modi requested citizens of Uttar Pradesh, which has witnessed several protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), to maintain public properties instead of destroying them. While addressing in Lucknow at a function at the Lok Bhawan, PM Modi asked people not to pay attention to the rumors.

He said “I urge and tell these protesters that if good roads, facilities, and a clean sewerage system is a citizen’s right, maintaining them correctly is their responsibility as well,” he said. “People who damaged public property and were involved in violence in the name of agitation in UP should introspect if what they did was right.”

Lucknow had witnessed widespread arson by anti-CAA protesters on December 19, in which vehicles including media outside broadcasting (OB) vans, and a police outpost were set ablaze by rampaging mobs. At least one person was killed after sustaining a bullet wound during violence in the city.

PM Modi said public property which was targetted during such agitation is for the use of citizens, including those indulging in violence and arson.

“Since partition and independence, we focus has been on our rights. Now the need of the hour is to change our attitude towards our duties and responsibilities in nation-building,” Modi added.

Modi claimed if the people have the right to good roads, public amenities, medical facilities, good education, etc, then they also should take responsibility to ensure the safety and cleanliness of such infrastructure and services.

Earlier Modi unveiled a statue of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee at the Lok Bhawan and also laid the foundation stone for the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical University in Lucknow. The UP government has given 50 acres of land for the varsity.

PM Modi also launched a national plan to conserve groundwater on the 95th birth anniversary of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who represented Lucknow in the Lok Sabha five times.
