Priyanka-Yogi left, But Sonbhadra still reels under fear

The villagers say the people of Murtiya-from where the Pradhan belonged- are threatening the children of Ubhha that if they step in their village, they will kill them.

On July 17, Uttar Pradesh’s Ubhbha village in Sonbhadra witnessed a massacre. 10 tribals were gunned down for land. The mass shooting had left 28 people injured. Since the news created a furore, people condemned it, officials were transferred, a lot of political drama happened. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited the village while Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi staged a dharna. A month later, everyone has moved on but the people of this village have not and definitely not the innocent children.

The impact of the Sonbhadra massacre in Uttar Pradesh is reflecting on the education of school students as well. The fear of the massacre in Sonbhadra is such that the children of the village have stopped going to school. Few kilometres away from Ubhha there is another village, Murtiya. The village head who led the shootout hails from this village. According to the villagers, the children do not want to go to the Murtiya village where the school is located.
The villages are pretty close to each other but if you see the situation they are far different from each other. While you will see no facilities in Ubhbha, Murtiya is different. In Ubhbha there is no school, there is no police station. But in Murtiya these facilities are available. So, children from Ubhbha have to go Murtiya for schooling. But since, the horrific massacre, the children’s schooling has stopped. They have stopped going to school. The villagers say the people of Murtiya are threatening the children of Ubhha that if they step in their village, they will cut them and throw into a nearby river.
From Ubhbha village, almost 250 children daily go to Murtiya for study. But since the massacre, the terror is such, that the kids don’t even want to step out of their houses. When we talked to one of the school kids, she told us that her parent fear that if she goes to school, she might not return alive, she might not even return at all.

Talking about Ubhbha village, there is only one primary school in a village. The population of the village is about 1200 but there is only one school and that too mind you is only from, classes 1 to 5. There is not a single junior secondary school and inter-college for studying after class 5.

If we look at the location of the inter colleges here, the children have to travel 11 kilometres. This is a private school called Awadh Narayan Tiwari Inter College situated in Ghuaas Colony, Sonbhadra. another school which is also a private one, is 10 km away, is Eswar Prasad Inter College, It is also located in Ghuas of Sonbhadra.

The people of Ubbha village are demanding now that the Uttar Pradesh government should build a police station and an inter-college in village. Only then can the children of Umbha village be safe. Apparently, people here also say that on the order of the Yogi government, the land was surveyed in Ubbha village for constructing an inter-college. But the people of Murtiya village, together with the government officials DM and BSA, are not allowing inter colleges to open in Umbha village.
