Is Modi a good ‘Chowkidar’?

Bharatiya Janata Party launched “Main Bhi Chowkidar” campaign for 2019 Lok Sabha election. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that he will be the Chowkidar of the country. Following him, many BJP leaders changed their names on Twitter as well. Today, PM Modi lauding the “Mission Shakti” said that the government has ensured that there is a “Chowkidar” in space. While, PM Modi and BJP seem to capitalise on ‘Chowkidar’ slogan, our Managing Editor Mr. Sujit Nair in this editorial ask whether he is really a good ‘Chowkidar’?

Nirav Modi’s bail plea rejected for second time

London| Fugitive diamond trader Nirav Modi has received a big setback from London’s Westminster Court. The court has rejected his bail plea for the second time in a row. The next hearing of the case will now be on April 26. Nirav Modi was produced before the Westminster Court today. Lawyer Anand Dube represented Nirav Modi in the court.

While hearing the case, the judge refused to grant Nirav Modi the conditional bail. The judge said that the bank has suffered a lot. The evidence has been destroyed. The judge noted that this is a very unusual case of fraud.

Nirav Modi’s lawyer for conditional bail argued that Nirav Modi has not got permanent residence in the United Arab Emirates and Singapore. His son has left for the US. He is now living alone with his dog. Nirav Modi is in the UK from January 2018. He has not travelled after the cancellation of passport.

A new file with additional evidence against Nirav Modi has submitted in Westminster Magistrates Court on Friday ahead of the fugitive diamantaire’s appearance before a judge here for his bail second application.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), on behalf of Indian authorities, submitted the additional file of evidence in court.

“It’s a big file with only a few papers,” said Chief Magistrate Emma Arbuthnot, on being handed the file by CPS barrister Toby Cadman.

Arbuthnot is the same judge who had ordered the extradition of former Kingfisher Airlines boss Vijay Mallya last December.
