Assam NRC: Mirror test for Mamata Banerjee’s views on immigrants

In the last few days west bengal chief minister mamata banerjee fervently voiced her criticism over the updated Assam citizen’s list which leaves out more than 40 lakh names and the plan to crack down against the illegal bangladeshi immigrants. Mamata Banerjee had retorted that the NRC will lead to “bloodshed” and “civil war”. She was as dramatic when she spoke out in parliament on Bangladeshi immigrants exactly 13 years ago where she was making an exact opposite argument back in 2005. The National Register of Citizens draft is an exercise to identify illegal immigrants from Bangladesh – the draft has triggered a massive political controversy. As the NRC issue heats up on both the ruling and opposition side, it is clear on the fact that mamata banerjee is seeking a national role and TMC wats to expand beyond bengal. The NRC issue is not about the Bengalis vs the Government, or the citizens of Bihar vs the Government or the Muslims vs the Government or any other state, caste, religion vs the Government. It is about detecting the illegal Bangladeshi immigrants and protecting the Indian citizens. The entire issue is about the National security.
