Attacked For Eating Meat or Opposing Puja? What Led To JNU Violence During Ram Navami?

“The ram navami processions in different states, turned violent leading to stone pelting and arson and destruction of property. On the same day, Jawaharlal Nehru university was also hit with violence as two groups ABVP and Left wing reportedly clashed with each other. The left organizations claimed that members of ABVP attacked some students in Kaveri hostel allegedly for eating meat. They said that the members of ABVP opposed cooking non veg during Ramnavami. Several students were injured in the attack and were hospitalized. On the other hand, the ABVP too accused left of provoking violence. It alleged that the Left did not allow the ABVP members to hold a Ram Navami pooja. and those who were going to attend it were attacked by the Left members. Total 16 people have been injured in the clashes from both sides according to reports.

As the matter escalated, late in the night, students of JNU took to street demanding arrest of the ABVP members. The students carried out a march from Sabarmati Hostel till vasant kunj police station and protested the incident. Police said the case was registered based on a complaint filed by members of JNUSU, SFI, DSF and AISA early this morning against unknown ABVP students. On the other hand, ABVP members too have filed a complaint with police.

After the incident, the JNU administration issued a press release. The left has accused that the press release matches with the ABVP version of events and demanded independent judicial commission.
