Haldwani Row: “For the past few days social media is flooded with videos of hundreds of women from Uttarakhand’s Haldwani from old ladies to young kids, protesting in the bone chilling cold against the high court order of eviction that impacted about 4000 families. The railways had claimed the land on which the families have been living. Based on this claim the authorities issued eviction notices to over 4000 families. However, the families claim, they have been living in the area for years now and that they all have valid documentations recognized by the govt authorities. The High Court had ordered the authorities to evict 4000 families within just 7 days. The Supreme Court today heard the matter and ordered a stay on the eviction. In a stern message the Supreme Court also observed that “”there cannot be uprooting of 50,000 people in 7 days””. Taking note of the m,atter the Supreme Court also asked the state govt to find a practical solution to the issue.
