At least 141 people have died after a British-era bridge in Gujarat’s Morbi collapsed last evening. Some 177 people have been saved and teams are searching for several others who are still missing. Around 500 people, including women and children, were on the suspension bridge when the cables supporting it snapped, sending people crashing into the river below. Teams of the Indian Army, the Navy, Air Force, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), fire brigade and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are carrying out the rescue operations on war footing. The rescue operations continued overnight as several teams of NDRF were airlifted by the Indian Air Force (IAF) and sent to Morbi to assist in the rescue operation.
