In 2022, India witnessed 28,522 murder cases, averaging 78 daily or over three per hour, as per the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).
Though a decrease from 2021 and 2020, Uttar Pradesh reported the highest murders (3,491), followed by Bihar, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and West Bengal.
Sikkim, Nagaland, Mizoram, Goa, and Manipur had the fewest cases. Among Union Territories, Delhi topped with 509 cases. Adults comprised 95.4% of victims, with 8,125 females.

NCRB identified motives such as dowry, witchcraft, communal disputes, casteism, political reasons, and love affairs behind the murders, along with family disputes and robberies.
