In 1998 a new party emerged in Indian state of West Bengal. The party founded by Congress rebel Mamata Banerjee and was given the name: All India Trinamool Congress. It has been 23 years and the party has created a formidable presence in West Bengal and also in National Politics. In the span of 23 years, the party has formed govt in the state of West Bengal twice and has also been a part of the Union govt during UPA era. Mamata Banerjee’s Maa, maati, manush slogan steered the party to resounding victory in the state twice. It was Banerjee and her party that breached the red fortress and ended the years long CPIM rule in West Bengal.
While the party was founded in 1998, it was only in 2011, that the party rose to prominence in the state. The 12 years in between marked immense struggle, and churning at the ground level. However, just a decade after the party tested success, it is faced with another big challenge: The BJP. This year, the state will go in for an assembly election and it will be a déjà vu for the TMC. In this episode today we will talk about west Bengal politics, the challenge posed by BJP and How Mamata Banerjee is handling the challenge.
