“According to the report of The Wire, a disgruntled employee claiming to be of BJP’s IT cell, on Twitter had posted about the existence of the secret app. She also alleged that an app named ‘Tek Fog’ was used to increase the popularity of the ruling party, target critics, and influencing the opinion of people on almost all social media platforms. This was the lead that led to further investigation began. According to report, the source who had worked with the BJP IT Cell earlier said that a BJP leader Devang Dave was her handler and had promised her a lucrative govt job if the BJP won the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, which did not materialise. The news portal says it went through a process of independent verification of every allegation made by the whistleblower. The source did not give The Wire direct access to the Tech Fog app. However, he managed to connect the wire team to a BJYM official.
It has been revealed in the investigation that one of the main functions of this app is to hijack the ‘trending’ section of Twitter and trending section of Facebook. To do this, app operators can use the app’s (in-built) automation features to auto-retweet tweets by an individual or group or auto-share posts by accounts under their control, and spam existing hashtags.
