Supreme Court Questions Timing Of Kejriwal’s Arrest Before General Elections

On Tuesday, April 30, the Supreme Court asked the Enforcement Directorate (ED) why Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was arrested right before the general elections started.

A panel of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta was considering Arvind Kejriwal’s appeal against his arrest and detention by the Enforcement Directorate in the Delhi liquor policy case.

Justice Sanjiv Khanna emphasized the significance of liberty, stating that it cannot be overlooked. He raised concerns about the timing of the arrest, especially just before the general elections. Further, he stated that no attachment action has been taken so far in this case, and if it has been done, then show how Kejriwal is involved in the matter.

Additionally, the Supreme Court requested the probe agency to clarify the time gap between the start of proceedings and the filing of repeated complaints after some time.

While CM Arvind Kejriwal is in jail, today Home Minister Amit Shah addressed a journalist’s inquiry regarding allegations made by Sunita Kejriwal, wife of Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, accusing the BJP of attempting to harm her husband while he’s in jail. Shah emphasized that since Tihar and Delhi jails are under the jurisdiction of Kejriwal’s AAP government, any concerns about safety should be addressed by them. He further stated that if Sunita Kejriwal provides formal documentation of these threats, he would take necessary measures in response.

Arvind Kejriwal was detained on March 21 by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with a money laundering investigation associated with the previously repealed Delhi liquor policy. He has been held in Tihar Jail since April 1 and is slated to remain in judicial custody until May 7.

On April 9, the Delhi High Court concluded that there were no legal irregularities in the Chief Minister’s detention.
