2019 Bypoll elections: How AIMIM’s win has shaken the Bihar politics

Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM has won a seat for the first time in the Bihar Assembly, has created a huge splash in Bihar’s politics

The byelection results of five assembly seats and one Lok Sabha seat have shaken Bihar politics. Not because the ruling NDA had just two consolation wins one Lok Sabha and one assembly or the opposition RJD have scripted some sorts of a bounce-back by winning two assembly seats.

The most surprising story was of Asaduddin Owaisi’s All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) has won a seat for the very first time in the Bihar Assembly candidate Qamrul Hoda, dough BJP’s Sweety Singh in Kishanganj.

More than AIMIM’s victory, it is where it registered is of equal importance. With more than 60 per cent Muslim population, Kishanganj’s words were taken seriously by Muslims, who are 17 per cent of Bihar’s electorates, all across the state.

The Kishanganj Assembly seat was vacant from may after Congress MLA Jawed Alam got elected to Lok Sabha. Kishanganj was the only seat that opposition won in Bihar during the Lok Sabha election. The Congress fielded Jawed’s mother Sayeeda Banu. It had hoped that the victory would be a smoother sail. However, Sayeeda finished a poor third while AIMIM’s Qamrul Hoda bagging by 41.46 per cent votes.

By winning Kishanganj’s assembly seat Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM has created a huge splash in Bihar’s politics. It has spelt danger for the RJD and Congress as Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM emerged as a viable alternative.

In fact, more than NDA, who were hoping to get elect easily in this election, AIMIM victory has served as a warning for the opposition alliance of RJD and Congress, which may end losing big time if they fail to prove themselves as a better alternative for Muslims in Bihar.

The Bypoll results have also left ruling NDA in Bihar with some worry, as it could win just the Samastipur Lok Sabha seat which LJP retained and Nathnagar assembly seat where JD-U won. NDA’s poor performance has come only months after it won 39 out of a total 40 Lok Sabha seats in the parliamentary poll in the state. Tejashwi Yadav’s RJD has received a respite after it wrested two assembly seats from JD(U).

A BJP rebel candidate, who was expelled for contesting against JD(U) candidate in Daraundha in Siwan district, has won the seat.
