BJP Chief Amit Shah was yesterday sworn in as the new Union Home Minister of India. However, many challenges are facing Amit Shah for the next 5 years. India’s internal turmoil is ever-growing, with Maoists and militancy on the rise.
The immediate challenge would be Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. They were not held along with the Lok Sabha due to security reasons. The EC is waiting for the Home Ministry’s approval for the same.
Multiple reports claim that they would be held after the Amarnath Yatra in August. However, that is also the time when Kashmir’s violence is at its highest.
Moreover, BJP has been vocal about its plans on abolishing Article 370 and 35A in Kashmir. Facing a lot of backlashes, implementing it will not come easy to them.
In spite of all the stringent actions, the youth militancy is not reducing, especially since a few years. In 2018, about 191 terrorist organisations have sprung up. The increasing death toll of jawans will not stand as an easy task either.
In the North East, to invoke the NRC will be another issue, considering the backlash against the move. It is a big challenge for the government to ensure that no real Indian citizen is left out of NRC.
Another issue that poses as a challenge is Naxalism. States like Chhatisgarh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Jharkhand and Bihar still have a long way to go to get rid of the violence.
