Harvard Gets Relief Amid US Centre’s Ban On Foreign Students

Harvard Gets Relief Amid

Meanwhile, a federal judge has temporarily stopped the ban on Harvard by the Trump administration for enrolling international students

International students at Harvard University feel dismayed and find themselves caught in the middle of a battle. This is an ongoing tussle between US President Donald Trump and Harvard University, the oldest educational establishment in the nation.

This comes after President Trump’s decision to prohibit Harvard from admitting international students.

CNN reportedly spoke to a student. He said, “We are being used essentially as poker chips in a battle between the White House and Harvard, and it honestly feels very dehumanising.”

According to the Trump administration, Harvard has been inhibiting a very unsafe campus environment, treating Jewish people unfairly. The government aims to make changes to the university’s way of working. This according to it relates to terms of staff hiring, campus events and students’ admission.

A federal judge has temporarily stopped the ban on Harvard by the Trump administration for enrolling international students.

US District Judge Allison Burroughs has given the ruling. This is hours after Harvard gave a lawsuit opposing the US Centre’s decision. The lawsuit also stated about the confusion and distress the ban has created.

The lawsuit filed by the university stated, “It is the latest act by the government in clear retaliation for Harvard exercising its First Amendment rights to reject the government’s demands to control Harvard’s governance, curriculum, and the ‘ideology’ of its faculty and students.”

It also stated, “Effective immediately, countless academic programs, research laboratories, clinics, and courses supported by Harvard’s F-1 and J-1 visa students have been thrown into disarray. Immediate relief is necessary.”

The university has called the move by the government as “clear retaliation”. This was because Harvard refused to the government’s demands. The Trump administration then revoked its certificate which comes under the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP), as reported by CNN.

Harvard, like a lot of other colleges and universities had drawn plenty of criticism the previous year. This is because of its way of handling pro-Palestinian protests and encampments since after the Israel-Hamas war started. This, as well as Jewish students and alumni criticising the university for antisemitism on the campus.
