Headlines: SC slams Modi Govt, says, “Can’t suspend internet for indefinite period”

The Supreme Court today delivered its verdict in the petitions filed by Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad and others against the restrictions imposed in the Jammu and Kashmir after the government’s decision to abolish most of the provisions of Article 370 of the Constitution that granted special status to the former state. Justice Ramana one of the three judges hearing the case slammed the government on internet suspension and said that Right to internet is also a part of freedom of speech and expression. It also ordered the Jammu and Kashmir administration to review within one week all restrictive orders including the suspending of the internet since August 5.
On the imposition of Section 144, the SC bench said that “There needs to be an emergency for the invocation. Mere expression of disagreement cannot be ground.” The judgement is a ray of hope for the Jammu and Kashmir which has been reeling under communication blockade since last 6 months. #internetshutdown #Article370 #Kashmir
