J&K CM Engages In Duel Over IWT With Mehbooba Mufti

J&K CM Engages In

His response came after Mufti first called the Chief Ministerโ€™s stance on continuing work on the project โ€œโ€œdeeply irresponsibleโ€

Omar Abdullah, Jammu and Kashmirโ€™s Chief Minister criticized Mehbooba Mufti for opposing the rehabilitation of the Tulbul Navigation Project. He said that she had ignored the betrayal of J&Kโ€™s interests by the Indus Waters Treaty.

It is important to note that India in a set of measures against Pakistan, also suspended the Indus Water Treaty. These measures were taken after the Pahalgam attack in Jammu and Kashmir.

His response came after Mufti first called the Chief Ministerโ€™s stance on continuing work on the project โ€œdeeply irresponsibleโ€.

She had earlier written on X, โ€œAt a time when both countries have just stepped back from the brink of a full-fledged war โ€“ with Jammu & Kashmir bearing the brunt through the loss of innocent lives, widespread destruction and immense suffering โ€“ such statements are not only irresponsible but also dangerously provocative.โ€

The J&K CM replied, โ€œActually what is unfortunate is that with your blind lust to try to score cheap publicity points & please some people sitting across the border, you refuse to acknowledge that the IWT has been one of the biggest historic betrayals of the interests of the people of J&K.โ€

โ€œI have always opposed this treaty & I will continue to do so. Opposing a blatantly unfair treaty is in no way, shape, size or form warmongering, itโ€™s about correcting a historic injustice that denied the people of J&K the right to use our water for ourselves,โ€ Abdullah said.

Mehbooba Mufti said that time will itself reveal who is seeking to appease themselves. She spoke about Omar Abdullahโ€™s grandfather, Sheikh Abdullah, who was a leader of the fight for independence. Then, she said that oneโ€™s actions speak for themselves.

She then responded back, โ€œTime will reveal who seeks to appease whom. However, itโ€™s worth recalling that your esteemed grandfather Sheikh Sahab once advocated for accession to Pakistan for over two decades after losing power. But post being reinstated as Chief Minister he suddenly reversed his stance by aligning with India.โ€

โ€œWe donโ€™t need to stoke tensions or adopt warmongering rhetoric to validate our dedication. Our actions speak for themselves,โ€ she added.

The J&K CM replied again.

โ€œIs that really the best you can do? Taking cheap shots at a person you yourself have called Kashmirโ€™s tallest leader. Iโ€™ll rise above the gutter you want to take this conversation to by keeping the late Mufti Sahib and โ€˜North Pole South Poleโ€™ out of thisโ€, he said, adding, โ€œIโ€™m not going to stop the water, just use more of it for ourselves. Now I think Iโ€™ll do some real work & you can keep posting,โ€ he added.
