Assembly Elections to choose the next government of Maharashtra has begun. The state went to polling for the first time since the NCP-Sena split. This election will be the year’s last and most-watched contest.
Voting is underway for all 288 seats of the Maharashtra legislative assembly today, November 20. A total of 4,136 candidates are contesting in the elections.
The voting began at around 7 am and will conclude by 6 pm in the evening.
With Maharashtra, the Jharkhand assembly election will also conclude today. The results for both states will be announced on November 23 by the Election Commission Of India.
The Prime Minister and CM of Maharashtra urged voters of the state to vote in large numbers as polling opened for 288 seats of Maharashtra.

58% Voter Turnout In Maharashtra
Maharashtra recorded a 58% voter turnout in the Assembly Elections 2024 compared to a 54% voter turnout in the 2019 elections.

Maharashtra Election 2024 | Independent Candidate Dies At Polling Booth
An independent candidate Balasaheb Shinde, contesting the elections from Beed, Maharashtra, passed away on polling day. He suffered a sudden heart attack at a voting booth in Beed.
Shinde was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital. He was later transferred to another facility for advanced care. However, doctors at both hospitals declared him dead.

Maharashtra election 2024 | Voter Turnout
A voter turnout of 45.43% was recorded in Maharashtra till 3 p.m. on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, as polling continued across all 288 Assembly constituencies.
District-wise Turnout:
- Mumbai city: Lowest turnout at 39.34%.
- Gadchiroli: Highest turnout at 62.99%.
Turnout in Major Cities:
- Mumbai: 27.7%
- Pune: 29%
- Thane: 28%
Key Observations:
According to the voter turnout percentage voter apathy is evident in major urban areas like Mumbai, Pune, and Thane, where turnout figures remain notably low.
The turnout remains shockingly low despite efforts by political leaders to encourage voting, participation has not improved significantly.
The Election Commission’s strategy to schedule voting midweek to avoid creating long weekends has failed to boost voter engagement.
