New Delhi: BJP National Vice President and senior leader has cautioned the party over joining hands with independent candidate Gopal Kanda in Haryana. In a series, Uma Bharti said the BJP should refrain from compromising on its moral values by taking support from Gopal Kanda.

“It has come to my attention that BJP could get support from an independent candidate named Gopal Kanda. If he is the same man because of whom a girl and her mother had committed suicide, the case is still in court and this man is out on bail,” said Uma Bharati.

Bharati said, “Whether Gopal Kanda is innocent or guilty will be decided by the courts, his winning the election does not free him of crimes that he might have committed.”

BJP has fallen short in Haryana by 5 seats. With a count of 40 seats, BJP needs external support of at least 6 seats. Seven independent MLAs have won in Haryana, Gopal Kanda is one of them.

On Friday BJP received unconditional support from all 7 MLAs making them odds on to form a government in Haryana.

Gopal Kanda, 53, was accused in 2012 of rape and abetting the suicide of Geetika Sharma, an employee in his aviation company. The Ex- Haryana home minister was jailed for a year before being released on bail. The rape charge was eventually dropped but within a year, the Geetika Sharma’s mother also committed suicide.

Kanda has won the Sirsa seat and emerged as one of the leaders crucial to government formation in Haryana, on Friday pledged his support to the BJP. On Thursday night Kanda was flown to Delhi by a BJP MP, said, “Under PM Narendra Modi’s leadership, Haryana will see development. Mostly all Independent MLAs have decided to give their unconditional support to the BJP.”

Kanda also dismissed the corruption case against him and said he had never demanded any post.
