Why Manipur Erupted Again: Clashes, Injuries, Internet Shutdown

Fresh tensions erupted in Manipur’s Imphal East and Imphal West districts on Saturday night, raising concerns once again over the fragile peace in the state.

But what triggered this renewed unrest?

On Saturday night, rumours began circulating about the arrest of five volunteers from a Meitei group known as Arambai Tenggol. It was alleged that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) had detained these members.

As the rumours spread, an angry crowd gathered at a police outpost in Imphal West, demanding the release of the reportedly arrested Meitei leaders.

Later that evening, unidentified miscreants set fire to the Sub-Divisional Collector (SDC) office in Yairipok Tulihal, causing significant damage to government infrastructure.

Security forces responded by firing several rounds to disperse the crowd. At least three people, including two journalists, were injured in the process.

In the wake of the violence, the Manipur government suspended internet and mobile data services in five affected districts in an attempt to curb the spread of misinformation.

Security has since been tightened in the region to prevent further escalation.

Although Manipur had seen relative calm in recent weeks following two years of violence, this latest unrest is a stark reminder that the situation remains volatile. The state continues to require attention and intervention to restore lasting peace and harmony.
