Centre Places Orders For 44 Cr COVID-19 Vaccines; Delivery Between Aug-Dec’21

The Centre has also capped the prices for private hospitals. Only a maximum of Rs 150 can be charged by them as service charge.

The Central government on Tuesday said that orders for 44 crore COVID-19 vaccines have been placed with the respective vaccine manufacturers, Serum Insitute and Bharat Biotech. The delivery of the same will be made between August and December 2021.

Specifically, orders for 25 crore doses of Covishield and 19 crore doses of Covaxin have been placed to achieve universalization of vaccination. This comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a fresh vaccine policy, wherein the Centre took over the 25% procurement power given to states as per the ‘liberalised vaccine policy’

India’s vaccination program is still struggling to gather momentum

The government last week also placed an advance order of 30 crore doses of a vaccine from Hyderabad-based Biological E, currently in the clinical trial stage, for its in-development protein submit vaccine.

The shift in policy comes after Supreme Court made stinging remarks at the liberalized vaccine policy, calling it “prima facie arbitrary and irrational” and demanded a blueprint of the way ahead. The judges strongly hinted that a do-over was in order.

“Let me tell you from my experience as a Judge — the ability to say that you’re wrong is not a sign of weakness, but a sign of strength,” Justice Chandrachud had said.

The Centre and PM Modi in his speech also repeatedly blamed the states for the vaccine policy of May that went awry, saying the states wanted to buy the vaccines and under the federal structure and that the government was in no position to refuse.
India’s second wave of COVID-19 continues to recede as 92,596 positive cases, 2219 deaths were recorded yesterday. 27,76,096 vaccine doses were administered in the last 24 hours, according to Union Health Ministry Data.
