Gandhinagar: This year-end Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh will be voting and electing their state government. The Election Commission of India (ECI) will hold a press conference in Delhi on Friday at Vigyan Bhawan. The EC is likely to announce the assembly election schedule for Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh.
The term of the Gujarat assembly ends on February 18 while that of Himachal Pradesh ends on January 8. Recently the Election Commission of India visited both states and reviewed the election preparedness. The team was led by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar.
The Gujarat assembly has 182 seats with 92 as the majority mark. Himachal Pradesh has 68 assembly seats, 35 being the majority.
The last elections were held in 2017. In the 2017 elections, the BJP won 99 seats in Gujarat and the Congress 77. In Himachal Pradesh, the BJP won 44 seats and Congress 21.
The state is witnessing back-to-back rallies and visits by top leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This has set the stage for the crucial elections in the two BJP-ruled states.
AAP is challenging BJP which has been in power in Gujarat for 22 years. Delhi CM and AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal is making frequent visits to the state and making several election promises.
BJP Chief JP Nadda flagged a rally in Gujarat this week. He accused Congress of halting development in the state. PM Modi’s recent visits have involved the launch of multi-crore projects.
Following assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Goa, Uttarakhand, and Manipur, now all eyes are on Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh because both states are scheduled to have elections by the end of this year
Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will kick-start the election campaign in Himachal Pradesh for the state assembly polls on October 14.
She will start the campaign by addressing the ‘Parivartan Pratigya Rally’ in the Solan district of Himachal Pradesh on Friday. This is the first time that the Congress leader will be addressing a “maha rally” in the poll-bound State.
