On May 29, after the Bombay High Court issued a direction, Fr Swamy was shifted to the private hospital from the Taloja Central Jail.

Tribal rights activist and Jesuit priest Fr. Stan Swamy, accused in the Elgar Parishad case, passed away at 1.30 pm on Monday. He was 84 years old.

The activist was arrested in Bhima Koregaon violence case from Ranchi on October 9, 2020.

On May 29, after the Bombay High Court issued a direction, Fr Swamy was shifted to the private hospital from the Taloja Central Jail.

Swamy was undergoing treatment at the Holy Family Hospital. He had suffered a cardiac arrest on Saturday, and doctors were unable to revive him.

Swamy and his co-accused, in the Elgar Parishad case, had been charged by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) as being members of frontal organisations working on behalf of the banned CPI (Maoists). The NIA, last month, had filed an affidavit before the HC opposing Swamyโ€™s bail plea. It had said there did not exist a โ€œconclusive proofโ€ of his medical ailments. The agency had alleged that Swamy was a Maoist, who had hatched a conspiracy to create unrest in the country.
