IIT Kanpur sets up panel to examine whether Faiz Ahmad Faiz poem is anti-Hindu

The teacher of the University filed a complaint against the protestors after which a probe committee is formed to examine the matter

 

KANPUR| Students of IIT Kanpur held a solidarity march for Jamia Millia University on December 17. Its was a part of Nationwide student protests started off when Delhi police manhandled Jamia students on December 15. In the march, students were singing Pakistani poet Faiz Ahmad Faiz’s iconic poem “Hum Dekhenge” as a protest anthem. Officials states it hurts Hindu sentiments as the poem lyrics are anti-Hindu.

The march had started with a reading of the poem and the students were caught on camera, said IIT-Kanpur’s Deputy Director Manindra Agrawal.

“Who knows Faiz Ahmad Faiz?” Agrawal questioned. “The video suggests that the poem provokes anti-Hindu sentiments,” he further added.

The teacher of the University filed a complaint against the protestors after which a probe committee is formed to examine the matter. The investigation will include matters like does the poem is anti-Hindu, the student’s social media post ahead of the protest and whether the students defied prohibitory orders.

The students claimed they were denied the permission to hold protest just hours ahead of the march but we continued as the message was sent across.

One of the most famous poets of Urdu, Faiz Ahmad Faiz was jailed several times for his revolutionary writings. He wrote “Hum dekhenge… (We will see)” one of his best-remembered compositions in New York in 1979. It was a mark of protest against the Pakistan dictator Zia-ul-Haq, who declared himself the President of Pakistan after overthrowing Zulfikar Ali Bhutto government.
