“Not statues, build school and colleges”: Raghuram Rajan’s advice for Modi Govt

Hindu nationalism is creating tenseness, those who are in power, have a tendency to want maximum control. The BJP government is also no exception

New Delhi: Former RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan has criticized the Narendra Modi government’s policies. Raghuram Rajan said that instead of building statues of national and religious legends in India, build more modern schools and colleges which is needed. Rajan said the BJP led government is no exception to having a tendency “to want more power, especially given the social and political agenda is focused”.

Considering the socio-political agenda of the Narendra Modi government, Raghuram Rajan said, “Instead of building gigantic statues to national or religious heroes, our country should build more modern schools and universities that will open its children’s minds to make them more tolerant and respectful of one another, and helping them hold their own in the competitive globalized world of tomorrow.”

Rajan has given a detailed commentary on the Indian economy in the article ‘How to fix the economy’ in the India Today magazine. In his article, former RBI Governor has quoted that Hindu nationalism does not just foment social tensions but also detracts India from its economic growth.

“Hindu nationalism is creating tenseness, those who are in power, have a tendency to want maximum control. The BJP government is also no exception. Especially as far as the social and political agenda of this government is concerned, Raghuram Rajan has targeted the Modi government. Hindu nationalism not only creates social tension, but it is not in the interest of India in any way. But it does affect India’s economic development.” Raghuram Rajan also said that social tension is increasing.

Rajan criticizing the Narendra Modi government for misusing investigating agencies, writes the government is “attempting to bulldoze its way by empowering its investigative and tax agencies”.

Paralyze its own officials who fear similar actions by future governments and business careful about long-term investment”.

Raghuram Rajan writes professionalism means that investigating and tax agencies should not be allowed to “go on fishing expeditions” and they should be careful of appearing to criminalize all business. “They should certainly not give the feeling that they are being used for a political penalty”.
