2 Students In JNU Fined Rs 1.79 lakh For Violating Hostel Rules

Two hostel students from (JNU) Jawaharlal Nehru University were fined Rs 1.79 Lakh combined.

Allegedly, both the students used to bring outsiders into their rooms, consume alcohol and consume hookah, among other violations.

On January 8, the students were asked to deposit the fine within 5 days, as per official notices issued to them.

“12 unknown individuals were found in your room consuming alcohol and creating a disturbance on the hostel premises in your absence. This behaviour constitutes a serious violation of hostel rules,” the first notice read.

The 1 lakh 79 thousand is segregated in different forms, which include Rs 60,000 for unauthorised entry of outsiders, Rs 2,000 for hookah use, Rs 10,000 for aggressive behaviour, Rs 6,000 for possessing an induction stove and heater, Rs 2,000 for drinking and Rs 10,000 for aggressive behaviour.

The second notice alleges that “Several outsiders were present in another student’s room, where alcohol was consumed.”

It further says, “The Warden Committee and security personnel attempted to open your room at that time, but you did not open the door.”

Rs 85,000 for allowing unauthorised individuals on two occasions, Rs 10,000 for aggressive and disruptive behaviour, Rs 2,000 for drinking, and Rs 2,000 for possession of a hookah. The student was fined 99,000.

Notices also caution that if the student fails to pay the fines within the time given, it could result in further disciplinary action, including eviction from the hostel.

The notices warn, “Any future complaints or violations will result in your immediate eviction from the hostel without prior notice.”

Kunal Kumar, the former president of Sutlej Hostel, criticised the fines, calling them extortion.

He alleges, “In a university where the semester fee is only Rs 200, students are fined amounts ranging from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.5 lakh. These fines are being imposed on those who do not support the ABVP,”.
