DMK, the main opposition party of Tamil Nadu along with other parties like CPI, CPI(M) and Congress will hold a state-wide shutdown today. The cause of the shutdown in the Cauvery issue which is a decade old matter between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The opposition parties led by Tamil Nadu are making demands that the Cauvery Management Board, as it has been ordered by the Supreme Court to be set up straightway. They have accused the central government of postponing the establishment of the Cauvery Management Board because of the electoral gains in the Assembly elections that are due next month in the state of Karnataka.
M K Stalin, the working president of DMK had met the opposition parties in Chennai 1 April so as to garner their support for the state-wide shutdown. He has even made an appeal to all the sects of the society that also include traders and farmers, to extend their support for the shutdown and get in unison for the Cauvery case.
Moreover, S Thirunavukkarasar Tamil Nadu Congress president, Thirumavalavan chief of VCK (Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi) chief, state secretaries of the CPI and CPI(M) R Mutharasan and K Balakrishnan respectively who among other leaders had attended the meeting that was organized by Mr Stalin.
Further, a “Cauvery Rights Retrieval Yatra” will be taken out after the shutdown, as so was stated by Stalin on Sunday. All the friendly party leaders would participate in the rally, he stated and said that it would start off from the Cauvery Delta region.
He also said that the details of the long journey for securing the rights of the state of Tamil Nadu for the issue of Cauvery will be disclosed later after taking consultation from the leaders of the friendly parties.
He added, “Black flags will be shown to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Cabinet colleagues during their visit to Tamil Nadu. This will be done to condemn them for not setting up the Cauvery Management Board, despite the order of the Supreme Court.”
It was last week that Mr Stalin had stated the PM Modi is expected to visit Tamil Nadu on 15 April.
A resolution was adopted after the meeting of the opposition leaders of Tamil Nadu on 1 April which stated, “Tamil Nadu has been pushed to hold protest demonstrations and agitations seeking to implement the order of the Supreme Court on the Cauvery issue due to the collective negligence of the central and state governments.”
Accusing the centre and the state, the resolution also stated that regime of the ruling AIADMK is a “partner” of the central government has “bowed” before it.
