New Delhi: The BRICS member countries, according to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, should be aware of one another’s security concerns and help one another in the identification of terrorists. He said that this delicate subject should not be “politicized.”
Days after China blocked a joint proposal by India and the US to designate terrorist Abdul Rehman Makki, who is based in Pakistan, as an international terrorist in accordance with the UN sanctions committee’s rules, Prime Minister Modi made the remarks at the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) summit.
The summit this year in attendance featured PM Modi, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Brazil’s Jair Bolsonaro, and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.
The MEA on Friday released the specifics of the prime minister’s ideas and remarks made during the discussions in a statement following the summit, which was hosted by China.
“The Prime Minister also noted that as BRICS member we should understand security concerns of each other and provide mutual support in the designation of terrorists; this sensitive issue should not be politicised,” the MEA said
After China rejected the request to name Makki, sources in the Indian government claimed that Beijing’s action contradicted its stated goal of battling terrorism and revealed its “double standards.”
Indian diplomats said that Makki was involved in fund-raising, recruiting, radicalising, and planning strikes in India, notably in Jammu and Kashmir.
China has previously rejected requests to identify Maulana Masood Azhar, the leader of the Pakistan-based and UN-verified terrorist organization Jaish-e-Mohammed, as a terrorist. This was not the first time China had erected obstacles to the naming of recognized terrorists (JeM).
According to the BRICS declaration, the leaders strongly condemned any acts of terrorism “whenever, wherever by whomsoever perpetrated.”
“We recognise the threat emanating from terrorism, extremism conducive to terrorism and radicalisation. We are committed to combating terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, including the cross-border movement of terrorists, and terrorism financing networks and safe-havens,” it said.
The United Nations will continue to play a crucial and coordinating role in the fight against terrorism, according to the BRICS. “We reject double standards in countering terrorism and extremism conducive to terrorism,” it said.
“We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to contribute further to the global efforts of preventing and countering the threat of terrorism on the basis of respect for international law, in particular the Charter of the UN and human rights,” it added.
According to the MEA, PM Modi also emphasised India’s development cooperation with Africa, Central Asia, South East Asia, and the Pacific and Caribbean during the summit.
According to the report, the BRICS leaders met on Thursday to address a range of international concerns, including the reform of the multilateral system, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the global economic recovery. They also discussed counterterrorism, commerce, health, and agriculture.
PM Modi recommended the creation of a BRICS railroads research network and an online archive for BRICS papers as well as a call for the building of the BRICS identity, MEA said,
“India will be organizing BRICS Startup event this year to strengthen the connection between Startups in BRICS countries,” the MEA said.
“On 24 June, the Prime Minister highlighted India’s development partnership with Africa, Central Asia, South East Asia, and from Pacific to Caribbean; India’s focus on a free, open, inclusive, and rules-based maritime space; respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations from the Indian Ocean Region to the Pacific Ocean,” the MEA said.
“The participating guest countries were Algeria, Argentina, Cambodia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Fiji, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Senegal, Uzbekistan, Malaysia, and Thailand,” the MEA said
