Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus has been appointed as the chief adviser to Bangladesh’s interim government. The decision follows mass protests that led to the ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The unrest, sparked by a controversial quota system in government jobs, resulted in over 300 deaths. Bangladesh’s President Mohammed Shahabuddin announced the formation of the interim government and ordered the release of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.
