Indian-Origin Manpreet Monica Singh Sworn In As First Female Sikh Judge In The US

Indian-American Judge Ravi Sandill, the state’s first South Asian judge, presided over the ceremony, which took place in a packed courtroom.

Houston: In a first, Indian-origin Manpreet Monica Singh has been sworn in as a Harris county judge,  in the US. Singh was born and raised in Houston and now lives in Bellaire with her husband and two children. She was sworn in as a judge of the Harris County Civil Court at Law No. 4 in Texas on Friday.

Singh’s father immigrated to the US in the early 1970s. A trial lawyer for 20 years, she has been involved in numerous civil rights organizations at the local, state, and national levels.

“It means a lot to me because I represent H-town (a nickname of Houston) the most, so for it to be us, I’m happy for it,” she said at the oath ceremony.

Indian-American Judge Ravi Sandill, the state’s first South Asian judge, presided over the ceremony, which took place in a packed courtroom.

“It’s a really big moment for the Sikh community,” Sandill said. “When they see someone of color, someone a little different, they know that possibility is available to them. Manpreet is not only an ambassador for Sikhs, but she’s an ambassador for all women of color,” he said.

There are an estimated 500,000 Sikhs in the US, with 20,000 Sikhs living in the Houston area. Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said: “It was a proud day for the Sikh Community, but also a proud day for all people of Colour who see the Diversity of the City of Houston in the Diversity of the Court”.

Baripada (Odisha) | Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a number of central government projects in Odisha worth more than Rs 4,500 crore.

The projects were unveiled during Modi’s second visit to the eastern state in less than a fortnight.

He had unveiled some projects in Bhubaneswar and addressed a BJP rally near the historic Khurda town on December 24.

Describing the projects as a new year gift to the people of Odisha, the prime minister expressed hope that 2019 will steer the state on a path of rapid development.

The projects inaugurated by Modi are related to road highways and transport, petroleum and natural gas, railways, culture, tourism and passport services.

Some key projects include four-laning of three major national highways in Odisha, laying of a section of a key LPG pipeline and doubling of an important railway line.

The prime minister also flagged off a new passenger train on a route, unveiled multi-modal logistics hub in Balasore as well as a project for restoration and conservation of historical site of Haripurgarh.

Modi also inaugurated passport sewa kendras at post offices in Bhadrak, Cuttack, Jajpur, Aska, Keonjhar and Dhenkanal through video conferencing.

Currently, people have to go to the regional passport office at Bhubaneswar, officials added.

Foundation laying and inauguration of a host of projects by the prime minister comes ahead of general election, which is due in a few months’ time.

The assembly polls in Odisha are also slated to be held simultaneously with the Lok Sabha polls.

During his last visit to Odisha on December 24, Modi had unveiled a number of projects worth more than Rs 14,500 crore.
