In order to reduce dropout rates and provide students with greater and better academic flexibility the state has implemented new rules. The Maharashtra government has revised its State Curriculum Framework for School Education (SCF-SE).
Under this new policy, Class 10 students who fail to achieve the minimum passing marks in mathematics and science will still be eligible to enroll in Class 11, provided they score at least 20 marks in these subjects.
The Maharashtra State Council for Educational Research and Training (SCERT) has reduced the passing marks for Math and Science from 35 to 20. This is a move formalized in the updated SCF-SE for Class 10. This initiative is expected to reduce pressure on students struggling to score passing marks in these subjects.
What are the rules?
- Minimum passing marks for Maths and Science will be 20 and not 35.
- Students with lower marks will be promoted to the next class but they will not be allowed to pursue higher studies in Math and Science.
- Their certificates will indicate that they have ‘passed’, but they will be restricted from enrolling in courses related to these subjects in higher education.
- Students will have the freedom to explore other streams such as Humanities and Arts for their future academic pursuits.
- Additionally, students who wish to improve their scores will have the option to retake exams.

The new policy is designed to support students who are failing to score passing marks in Maths and Science leading to an increase in dropout rate. This will also help students who score well in Art and Literature related subjects.
According to reports, Rahul Rekhawar, director of the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), said “The change is part of the new curriculum framework that has already been approved by the school education department. The ‘change is designed to ensure students are not pushed unfairly out of the system”.
Sharad Gosavi, chairman of the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, noted that the changes in passing marks will be introduced when the new curriculum is implemented across the state.
