‘Vehicle was signaled to stop, tried to flee’ Amit Shah’s statement on Nagaland incident

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah remarked in the Lok Sabha that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been set up to investigate the recent Nagaland civilian killings. The team will provide the report within 30 days.

“The army had acquired information on extremist movement in Oting, Mon. 21 commandos set up an ambush in the suspected region based on this information. When a car arrived, it was signaled to halt, but it attempted to run. “The vehicle was fired upon on suspicion of carrying radicals,” Shah said in the Lok Sabha.

Earlier, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi described the occurrence as a “dark day” in the history of the state, blaming it on “inaccurate intelligence.” “Everyone is wondering how a group of unarmed citizens could not be separated from diehard militants,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the third time on Monday till 3pm as opposition MPs continued to disrupt proceedings.

Members of the Lok Sabha criticized the killing of civilians by security forces in Nagaland during an anti-insurgency operation on Monday and requested an independent investigation into the incident. Members also demanded that the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), which is now in effect in Nagaland and authorizes security forces to use force and even open fire without notice in the event of a breakdown of law and order, be repealed.

Manish Tewari, Senior Congress leader, stressed the need for emotional integration of people living in border areas for the country’s unity and integrity and requested an impartial judicial inquiry into the regrettable incident by a sitting high court judge. He also advised the government not to use the AFSPA to grant impunity to those found guilty.
