“I Will Consult The Attorney General And Home Ministry Before Making Any Decision,” Maharashtra Governor says

Ajit Pawar led delegation urged that Thackeray’s nomination from the two vacant seats from the Governor quota needs to be done at the earliest

MUMBAI| On Tuesday Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar along with the delegation reach out to Maharashtra Governer Bhagat Singh Koshyari with a unanimous recommendation to nominate Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray in the Legislative Council as soon as possible.

It’s necessary as Uddhav Thackeray is not a member of either house. Uddhav Thackeray to become a member of either house has to be elected within six months. Thackeray was sworn in as CM of Maharashtra on November 28th last year from then till 28 May he’ll complete six months. If Thackeray fails to do so, then he has to resign as the CM of Maharashtra and will again create instability in the state politics.

To hold this back, Ajit Pawar led delegation urged that Thackeray’s nomination from the two vacant seats from the Governor quota needs to be done at the earliest as the government is busy combating COVID-19.

The Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar delegation consisted of NCP minister Jayant Patil and Chhagan Bhujbal. Congress minister Balasaheb Thorat and Aslam Sheikh. ShivSena minister Eknath Shinde and Anil Parab. Jayant Patil said, “We submitted a letter to Governor with a plea to nominate CM Thackeray in the Legislative Council at the earliest.

Jayant Patil said, “We also told him this is the second letter recommending Thackeray’s nomination. We requested that the state cannot afford political instability during the present coronavirus pandemic”. Patil hoped that Governor may consider their request.

Following the second letter, Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari said, “I will consult the Attorney General and Home Ministry before making any decision”. He also said, “Governor also said if Thackeray could not become a member of the Legislative Council then the Governor rule will be imposed for eight days”.

The Minister said, “After that, Thackeray can take the oath again as he enjoys the support of 172 legislators”. However, the delegation brought to Governor’s notice that Thackeray cannot take the oath again as he will have to be elected in either of the houses.

Governor advises that Maha Vikas Agadi could approach the court of law if Thackeray is not nominated. If he does that then BJP will contest it again. Further, the minister informed that the Governor asked the delegation to approach the Election Commission to announce poll schedule for nine seats of Legislative Council.

“However, the delegation said it will happen after the Covid-19 crisis is over. The delegation reiterated its plea to the Governor to soon nominate Thackeray in the Legislative Council to avoid a political crisis,’’ he added.
