AIADMK Announces E Palaniswami As CM Face, OPS To Assume Greater Role In Party

The move is seen as a delicate balance of power to ensure the AIADMK party stays together ahead of Tamil Nadu assembly elections next year.

Chennai| Gearing up for 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, the ruling AIADMK seemed to have ended the friction within the party and renominated sitting Chief Minister E Palaniswami as its CM face for the upcoming polls. However, his deputy O Panneerselvam has been given more say in the party affairs to diffuse the tensions between the two rival factions. There were strong speculations of discord between EPS and OPS factions ahead of the party meeting on Tuesday. The meeting went on till 3.30 AM.

The party has also approved a long-standing demand of forming an 11 member steering committee. The recommendation was made after the party chief J Jayalalitha died in 2016. The move is seen as a delicate balance of power to ensure the party stays together ahead of Tamil Nadu assembly elections next year.

The party decision assumes greater significance since late J Jayalalitha’s close aide VK Sasikala who was jailed in 2017 is set to come out of jail. Reports suggest that she may be released in January next year. Before going to jail she had appointed EPS on the top job.
