In Another Record Spike, Nearly 3 Lakh Covid Cases, 2,023 Deaths In India

In a grim new record for the country, in the last 24 hours, Coronavirus has infected 2,95,041 people in India and left 2,023 dead. Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday, urging self-discipline, said states must use lockdowns only as the last resort.

After the mammoth one day spike, the total number of deaths has increased to 1,82,553. This is the seventh straight day that India has reported over 2 lakh cases of Covid-19 infection. With more than 1.56 crore Covid cases, India is the second worst-hit hit country across the world, behind the United States and ahead of Brazil.

In his address to the nation on Tuesday night, PM Modi asked the states to think of lockdown as the last solution. His address comes at a time when India’s COVID-19 numbers have been going through the roof with the health infrastructure stretched beyond its capacity.

Maharashtra, the most impacted state by the outbreak, logged 62,097 fresh coronavirus cases on Tuesday, taking the total caseload to 39.6 lakh. Along with the section 144 imposed in the state in the wake of surging cases, more stringent restrictions are likely to be announced today. Ministers have recommended a full lockdown to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and have left the decision to him.

The southern states of Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh have the highest number of infections after Maharashtra.

In its biggest ever single-day spike, national capital Delhi reported 28,395 coronavirus cases on Tuesday. Some of the city’s biggest hospitals received stocks of medical oxygen late last night after several SOS appeals from Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Health Minister Satyendar Jain for oxygen supply at hospitals.

With 19,577 cases, Kerala on Tuesday recorded its highest single-day rise in COVID-19 infections, taking the states tally to over 12.72 lakh. Deaths of 28 patients were reported on the same day.

Nearly 30,000 new cases were reported in Uttar Pradesh. When vaccinations will be opened to all above 18, the state will offer Covid vaccines free of cost from May 1.
