“Attempt To Talibanise India?” Asks Dr Mathai On Jamiat President’s Comments On Co-education

“After Taliban should we expect the legitimizing of Al Qaida and ISIS too by the UN and the International community ?” Dr Mathai asked.

Dr Abraham Mathai, the Chairman of Harmony foundation and former Vice Chairman of Minorities Commission, on Wednesday slammed Jamiat President and questioned if asking Muslims not to send their daughters to Coed Educational institutions and encouraging others to do the same is an attempt to Talibanise India. Maulana Arshad Madani, the President of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, had on Tuesday said there should be separate schools for girls and boys and also asked non-Muslims to not send their daughters to co-ed schools or colleges to “keep them away from immorality and misbehaviour”.

“The statement by Arshad Madani the head of Jamiat Ulema e Hind not to send their daughters to co-ed schools and also appealing to others to do the same is very disturbing indeed,” Dr Mathai said.

“His reference to co-ed institutions as places of learning immorality and socially unacceptable behaviour is cause of genuine concern as it echoes the same call trumpeted by the Taliban in Afghanistan,” he added.

Dr Mathai questioned whether Madani’s blatant appeal be construed to be an extension of the tentacle of Taliban in our backyard. “Except for Javed Akhtar and Naseeruddin Shah no Muslim leader has condemned the Taliban carnage in Afghanistan. Should the silent euphoria of the Muslims in India at the takeover of Afghanistan by the Taliban mark the beginning of Talibanisation in India and the region?” he asked.

“Jamiat’s Maulana Arshad Madani’s statement that girls should not study in Co Ed schools is just the beginning of the radicalisation here which is detrimental to harmonious social and cultural relations.”

The former deputy chief of minorities commission also asked if the eerie silence of the Muslim community in India also suggests the slow radicalization on their part when hundreds have been killed after the Taliban has taken over Afghanistan.

“Do they feel that Afghan citizens especially the women do not enjoy the same constitutional privilege of Right to Life which they enjoy here ? Are they not tacitly endorsing the disenfranchisement of women to make them vulnerable to being demeaned as objects of exploitation !!”

Failure by educated Muslims to condemn the incendiary utterances by Arshad Madani amounts to their tacit approval of his statement and hence an implication of the tentacle of Taliban gaining a foothold here, Dr Mathai stressed.
