AYUSH Ministry Seeks Details On Claims Of Patanjali Coronil Treatment Of COVID-19

When questioned about coronil, ICMR officials said that they do not deal with ayurvedic medicines, AYUSH Ministry does

NEW DELHI| On Tuesday Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev launched that Patanjali Research Institute has invented coronil – an ayurvedic cure for novel coronavirus. Indian Council of Medical Research and AYUSH Ministry have distanced themselves from Patanjali’s cure for coronavirus Coronil.

At a press conference held at Patanjali headquarter in Haridwar, Ramdev said that Coronil has been tested in a randomised placebo-controlled clinical trial on COVID-19 patients. Ramdev said, “We conducted a clinical case study and clinical controlled trial, and found 69 per cent patients recovered in three days and 100 per cent patients recovered in seven days.”

Baba Ramdev claimed that coronil was the first Ayurvedic-clinically controlled, research, evidence and trial based medicine for COVID-19. The research was conducted in collaboration with the National Institute of Medical Science, Jaipur.

However, ICMR, which is the head medical body and nodal agency for the COVID-19 treatment in India, had declined to be associated with the new medicine. When questioned about coronil, ICMR officials said that they do not deal with ayurvedic medicines, AYUSH Ministry does.

When AYUSH Ministry officials were questioned, they said ICMR officials will give details regarding the new medicine. When we informed them of the ICMR response, the ministry officials said that the state government, in this case, Uttarakhand government, was responsible for granting a license to a pharma firm, including Ayurvedic drug manufacturer.

According to top sources in Patanjali, coronil has received a license as a medicine. “It contains salts and herbs suggested by AYUSH Ministry. Allopaths call these salts as anti-viral, whereas Ayurved knows them as immunity boosters,” the sources said.
