The 64 years old served as chairman of Microsoft’s board of directors till 2014. Now Gates has stepped away entirely, according to the tech giant.

Microsoft Chief Executive Satya Nadella, in his statement, said “It’s been a tremendous honor and privilege to have worked with and learned from Bill over the years. Bill founded our company with a belief in the democratizing force of software and a passion to solve society’s most pressing challenges, and Microsoft and the world are better for it.

Bill Gates left his CEO position in 2000 handing the control to Steve Ballmer to devote his time to charitable work. In 2014, Gates gave up his post of chairman at the same time when Nadella became the third CEO of Microsoft.
