BREAKING: Migrant Labourers Returning Home Crushed by Vehicle on Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway

Out of the 7 migrant labourers, 4 were reported dead on the spot while the others were severely injured near Virar on Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway.

Mumbai| 7 migrant labourers, returning back to their villages in Rajasthan on foot after the lockdown, were crushed by a vehicle on Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway on Friday night.

These labourers were asked to return by the Gujarat police from Bhilad (Gujarat-Maharashtra border) while on their way to the village on foot. While returning to their shanties in Vasai, they were crushed by a speeding vehicle on Friday night.

Out of the 7 labourers, 4 were reported dead on the spot while the others were severely injured.

Assistant Police Inspector Ranjitsinh Pardeshi of Mandvi police check post informed that the Virar police have seized the vehicle but the driver of the vehicle is still absconding.

Two of the deceased have been identified as Kalpesh Joshi (32), and Mayank Bhatt (34) while the rest of them are yet to be identified. One of the three injured labourers, who have been admitted to hospital, is serious as per the police statement.

The seven labourers were among the thousands of workers of the unorganised sector who have become jobless after the 21-day lockdown imposed in light of the coronavirus spread. They were returning to their village in Rajasthan on foot since no transport other than essential goods is allowed across the borders of states.

Many labourers from Rajasthan and Gujarat who work at construction sites are rendered jobless and have been forced to walk back to their villages.
