Breaking News: SC Relief To Arnab Goswami, Accepts Interim Bail Plea

Senior advocate Harish Salve, who is representing Arnab Goswami in the Supreme Court, demanded a CBI inquiry into the case.

New Delhi| The Supreme Court on Wednesday granted interim bail to Arnab Goswami, editor-in-chief of Republic TV. The Bombay High Court had earlier rejected Arnab’s bail application, after which he challenged the decision in the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court also reprimanded the Uddhav government during the hearing of Arnab’s plea. The court said that if the state governments target a person, then they should understand that we (the apex court) will protect it.

Senior advocate Harish Salve, who is representing Arnab in the Supreme Court, demanded a CBI inquiry into the case. At the same time, on Arnab’s petition, the Maharashtra government had filed a caveat saying that no order should be issued without hearing its side.

Six highlight statements by SC Bench

  • Our democracy is exceptionally flexible. The Maharashtra government shouldn’t overlook it.
  • If an individual’s personal freedom is curbed, it will be a suppression of justice.
  • Does the Maharashtra government need to question the petitioner in custody? We are struggling with the issue of personal freedom.
  • If the constitutional courts do not interfere, we are on the way to destruction.
  • We are hearing in this case because neither the High Court was able to grant him bail nor could it safeguard personal freedom.

What is the matter?

Arnab Goswami and two others were arrested by the Raigad police on November 4 in a case of abetting interior designer Anvay Naik and his mother for suicide in 2018. Later, the court sent them to judicial custody till 18 November. Arnab is currently lodged in Taloja jail.

Ram Kadam meets Home Minister regarding Arnab

BJP MLA Ram Kadam on Tuesday met Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh over Arnab’s arrest. He handed over a letter requesting an order to properly investigate the policemen who acted against Arnab Goswami in a ‘sentiment of revenge’.

The letter read, “Arnab was misbehaved with and assaulted at the time of his arrest. The policemen who assaulted him are taking action against him in retaliation. The public is angry at the mistreatment of Arnab Goswami. The whole country is upset with this wrongful action.”

Action will be taken against the negligent officers

Meanwhile, Konkan Region Inspector General of Police Sanjay Mohite has written a letter to Meera Bhayandar Vasai Virar Commissioner Sadanand Date recommending action against Inspector Suresh Varade, who was involved in the investigation of the suicide case. The commissioner said that Varade has been summoned after receiving the letter on Monday. Action will be taken against them. Varade had filed a closure report in the suicide case at the Alibag police station.
