“In March 2020 the world was suffering from COVID19. The Supreme Court also had to take a call and the Bar thought the Court will close down. But then CJI Bobde rose to the occasion and started virtual hearing and almost 50,000 cases have been disposed of. It’s a great achievement”, AG Venugopal said.

The Supreme Court, on CJI’s last day, witnessed an eventful and heated hearing today with regards to its decision to take suo-moto cognizance of the prevailing COVID-19 situation. Senior lawyer and President of the Supreme Court Bar Association Vikas Singh said “You had taken up such a contentious matter on the last day too. This shows the involvement of the Judges and to ensure oxygen supply can be maintained. Till the last day you were concerned about what is happening.”
“I hand over the baton to Justice Ramana who will, I am sure, very ably lead the court.”

On a lighter note, CJI Bobde, while talking about virtual hearings quipped “Advantages (of virtual hearings) was that hearings were homely as I could see hills behind lawyers, sculptures and paintings behind lawyers including guns and pistols. The painting behind SG Mehta has been removed now.”
With CJI Bobde’s retirement, Justice NV Ramana is all set to take over as the 48th Chief Justice of India.
