Several politicians, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik received the first dose of Covid-19 vaccine on Monday.

Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge, on a day the government opened up the Covid-19 inoculation drive for senior citizens, said the vaccine should be given to youngsters first.

The Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, when asked if he would get vaccinated, told ANI, “I am above 70 years of age. You should give it (Covid-19 vaccine) to youngsters who have longevity in life as opposed to me. I merely have 10-15 more years to live.”

Several politicians, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik received the first dose of Covid-19 vaccine on Monday.

PM Modi received the indigenously developed Covaxin shot by Bharat Biotech at AIIMS and appealed to all those who were eligible to get inoculated.

“Took my first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine at AIIMS. Remarkable how our doctors and scientists have worked in quick time to strengthen the global fight against Covid-19. I appeal to all those who are eligible to take the vaccine. Together, let us make India COVID-19 free!” PM Modi tweeted after taking the vaccine shot.

Haryana Health Minister Anil Vij, who had contracted Covid-19, said he would not get inoculated as he does not need it.

“The vaccination programme is being opened for the people today. There should be hesitation in people regarding getting vaccinated. However, I will not be able to receive a dose as after contracting Covid-19, my antibody count has reached 300, which is a lot. The trials vaccine may also have a role to play in this. So, I don’t need the vaccine right now,” Mr Vij tweeted in Hindi.

The Haryana health minister had taken a trial dose of Covaxin at a hospital in Ambala on November 20. However, he tested positive for coronavirus on December 5 last year and was hospitalised.
