Several voices have criticised this bill for violating the basic structure of federalism and snatching away power from an elected government.
In what could be a major setback for the Arvind Kejriwal led Delhi Government, the Centre on Wednesday notified the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Act, 2021 which is set to come in effect from today.

The Act offers sweeping powers to the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, a nominated head, vis-a-vis the elected head which is the Chief Minister. As per this legislation, which was passed by the Parliament during the Budget Session, the “government” in Delhi now means the “Lieutenant Governor” and the elected government will now have to seek the opinion of the L-G before taking any executive action.

This controversial legislation was passed in the Lok Sabha on 22nd March and on 24th March in the Rajya Sabha amid uproar and protests by official leaders. Several voices have criticised this bill for violating the basic structure of federalism and snatching away power from an elected government.
Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal had termed it a “sad day for Indian democracy”. Kejriwal also called it an insult to the people of Delhi who voted for the AAP government and said that it “effectively takes away powers from those who were voted by people and gives powers to run Delhi to those who were defeated”.
