New Delhi| An arrest warrant has been issued against senior journalist Paranjoy Guha Thakurta after the go-ahead of a court in Gujarat’s Kutch district, PTI reported. The warrant has been issued in relation to a 2017 defamation case against him filed by the Adani group.

The judicial magistrate ordered Nizamuddin Police Station to produce the journalist before the court.

However, Paranjoy Guha Thakurta’s lawyer said that they are yet to receive warrant. “We haven’t received any intimation. This information [on arrest warrant] has come to us from media,” Thakurta’s lawyer told PTI.

He added that the Adani group has withdrawn case against everyone except the author.

What’s The Matter?

In 2017, news website The Wire had published a report authored by Paranjoy Guha Thakurta that claimed the Centre had amended Special Economic Zone rules to facilitate duty reimbursements for raw materials to Adani Power Limited, leading to a benefit of Rs 500 crores. Following the publication of the report, Adani group filed a defamation case. However, in July 2018, a Gujarat court set aside the criminal defamation plea complaint, and accompanying summons to the website. Then in May 2019, the Adani Group withdrew the case against Th e Wire.
