India Reports 227 Cases, Sharpest Spike In A Single Day; Death Toll At 32

At least 25 fresh cases were reported from Delhi alone, taking the national capital’s tally to 97, as per the Delhi Health Department.

New Delhi| The number of Covid-19 cases climbed to 1,251 in India on Monday, registering the highest single-day increase of 227 cases, while the death toll rose to 32, the Union Health Ministry said.

The total cases are 1,251 — this includes 1,117 active cases, 102 cured/discharged/migrated people, and 32 deaths.

However, the government maintained it was still in the local transmission stage. The Supreme Court, meanwhile, cautioned that fear and panic are becoming a bigger problem than the coronavirus.

The government also said there was no immediate plan to extend the 21-day lockdown period, which entered its sixth day on Monday, while the Indian Army dismissed as “fake” social media posts about a possible emergency declaration next month.

While one death each was reported from Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, the details of the third was not available on the chart. So far, Maharashtra has reported the most deaths (8), followed by Gujarat (6), Karnataka (3) Madhya Pradesh (3), Delhi (2) and Jammu and Kashmir (2).

India is still in the local transmission stage of the coronavirus pandemic, the government has said, responding to questions about a health ministry document that said the country was currently in “local transmission and limited community transmission phase”. “Nowhere are we calling it community transmission. We are still in the local transmission stage. If we use the word ‘community’ then there is speculation,” said Luv Agarwal of the Indian Council of Medical Research.

COVID-19 has already killed more than 35,000 people worldwide, according to a tally kept by Johns Hopkins University, with the number of confirmed cases over 766,000. US President Donald Trump has warned that the peak death rate in the country from the coronavirus pandemic was likely to hit in two weeks.

New York man charged with hate crime for assaulting Indian-origin woman

Sheshadri Chari

New York | A 54-year old man has been charged with hate crime for assaulting an Indian-origin woman travelling in a subway and using homophobic slurs against her.

Allasheed Allah, 54, was arraigned on Thursday and charged with assault as a hate crime and aggravated harassment against Avneet Kaur, 20, for the attack in New York City‘s Queens borough last month. If convicted, Allasheed faces three and one-half to 15 years in prison, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said.

“Queens County is the most diverse county in the nation. It is home to many races, nationalities and sexual orientations. Crimes motivated by bias – particularly those involving violence – will never be tolerated in this county. When they do regrettably occur, they will be vigorously prosecuted and those involved will be severely punished,” Brown said.

According to the charges, Kaur was travelling on a subway train in Manhattan last month when Allasheed engaged her in a verbal dispute. During the dispute, he began making homophobic slurs towards Kaur and her friend.
As the two women began to walk away, the defendant followed them and struck Kaur in the back of her head and then once in her chest causing her to fall and strike her head and neck on a pole before hitting the floor.

According to the charges, the defendant admitted that he used homophobic language against Kaur and threatened her if she kissed her friend, travelling with her on the subway, again.

Kaur was immediately transported to a local Queens hospital where she underwent treatment for a fractured spine.
