Videos of the incident from February 1 last year had shown Gujjar shouting, “In our country, only Hindus will prevail, nobody else.”
Kapil Gujjar, who had opened fire in the air at the Shaheen Bagh protest site in February during the nationwide protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act, joined Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Times Now reported. He took the official membership of the saffron party in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad city.
Videos of the incident from February 1 last year had shown Gujjar shouting, “In our country, only Hindus will prevail, nobody else.” According to witnesses, he had fired shots in the air two or three times while standing right next to the police. Kapil Gujjar was arrested and taken into custody right after that.
Gujjar, during police interrogation, had said that he and his father Gaje Singh were members of the Aam Aadmi Party since 2019.
In photos accessed from the phone, Gujjar could be seen with senior AAP leaders of the AAP like Sanjay Singh and Aatishi along with his supporters.
However, both AAP and his family has refused the claim made by him. The family at the time told media that Kapil Gujjar’s father had contested the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) election in 2012 on a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) ticket and lost, but they have never been associated with AAP.
He had gone to the site of anti-CAA protest because he was annoyed with the traffic disruptions caused by road blockage, Gujjar had told police during interrogation. Gurjar said his family was in process of preparing for his sister’s wedding, which is why he had to spend hours in traffic jams caused due to the road closure due to protests.
He was granted bail by the Delhi high court.
