The southern state of Kerala now accounts for 50 percent of all new Covid-19 cases in the country, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) has pointed out.
Kerala reported 22,056 new confirmed cases of infection on Wednesday, along with 131 more Covid-related deaths. According to the MoHFW dashboard, Kerala accounts for 1,45,876 of the total 3,99,436 active cases in the country as of July 28.
Kottayam in Kerala has seen a 64 percent increase in Covid-19 cases since June 28.
Also, Malappuram saw a 59 percent increase in daily new cases during the same time, followed by Ernakulam with 46.5 percent and Thrissur with 45.4 percent.
A letter written by Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan to the Principal Secretary of the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Kerala, in this regard, has been accessed by India Today.
Rajesh Bhushan, citing the feedback of the central team, wrote that Kerala needs to “do more” in terms of containment.
Kerala accounts for 50 per cent of all new Covid-19 cases in the country, and it has been like that for a while now. Even fatalities have gone up. The reproduction value, which indicates the rate of infection, is well above the national average.

In the letter, Bhushan points to super-spreader events observed in Kerala in the recent past. The Health Secretary also wrote: “Compliance with mass/social gatherings guidelines need to be enforced strictly and correctly,” as super-spreader events were observed in Kerala.
Home isolation needs to be observed as per the guidelines of the MoHFW, Bhushan added. At present, 95 per cent of active Covid cases in Kerala are under home isolation.
The Union Health Secretary also expressed concern about non-adherence to Covid-appropriate behaviour among migrant workers in Kerala. Some Covid patients refuse to get themselves admitted to isolation centres, Rajesh Bhushan wrote, adding that such individuals need counselling.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is expected to hold a meeting with the chief secretaries of both Maharashtra and Kerala to discuss measures to contain the spread of Covid-19, sources say.
