Migrants Run Over By Train Applied For Transit Pass Week Ago, Walked After No Response From MP Govt

16 migrants were killed on Friday morning after they halted for rest on the railway tracks in Aurangabad. They had walked 45 km.

Aurangabad| The group of migrants had applied for e-transit passes a week ago but decided to walk to the home state after not getting any response from MP government, one of the survivors of the Aurangabad train accident on Friday said.

On Friday morning 16 labourers were killed after they halted for rest on the railway tracks in Aurangabad. They had walked 45 km from Jalna to Aurangabad, and were going towards Bhusawal, another 120 km, on foot in hopes of taking a train.

One of the three survivors, Dhirendra Singh, said they had unfinished work and family back at home and so could not wait any longer to reach MP.

Singh, who is from Maman village in Umaria district of the state said, “We had applied for e-passes a week ago with authorities in MP but got no response.”

He survived the misfortune as he was walking at a distance from the rest of the group, which sat down on the rail tracks to rest and then fell asleep. They were crushed by a passing goods train at 5.15 am.

He and the two other survivors called out to alert their group sleeping on tracks about the fast-approaching train, but their screams went unheard.

E-passes needed for migrant workers and others stranded due to the lockdown have been causing difficulties as there have been many complaints that the portal either does not provide a reply or an invalid pass.
