Mob lynching: Home Ministry issues advisory to state governments; asks to follow SC’s guidelines

New Delhi | The Union Home Ministry on Wednesday issued an advisory to all the state governemnt after Supreme Court strict remarks on the increasing cases of Mob lynching in the country.

The Supreme Court on September 24 had raised concern over the issue of Mob lynching and asked state governemnt to submit a compliance report within a week’s period. The court had also ordered the states and Union Territories to implement the apex court’s instructions to curb the increasing incidents of violence and mob violence in the name of cow protection. The top court also stated that people should realize that they will have to face strict law on the practice of events like mob lynching.

The Union Ministry in its advisory to the state government has asked to strictly implement the guidelines issued by the Supreme Court. The Apex court in its July 17 verdict had ordered the Union and State government to strictly deal with the events of people being killed by the self-proclaimed ‘Gau Rakshaks’. The Supreme Court bench stated that “horrendous acts of mobocracy” cannot be permitted to overrun the law of the land and issued a slide of guidelines for dealing with cow vigilantism and mob lynching.

The Supreme Court bench also sought a reply from the Central Government over the implementation of its instructions. The court ordered the Central and state governement to organise an awareness campaign against Mob lynching in the name of ‘Gau Raksha’ over television, radio, electronic and print media. However, only the states of Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Telangana, Nagaland, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu have submitted their reports on the issue.
