On Operation Bluestar Anniversary, Ex-Cricketer Harbhajan Singh Calls Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale A ‘Martyr’

Bhindranwale was the head of the Sikh religious sect Damdami Taksal. He was killed along with his armed followers during Operation Blue Star launched by the Indian Army in 1984 at the Golden Temple complex.

Ex-cricketer Harbhajan Singh in a controversial story posted on Instagram on Sunday hailed Khalistani terrorist Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale on the anniversary of Operation Bluestar and called him a ‘martyr’.

In the now-deleted story, Harbhajan is offering his ‘pranaam’ to Bhindranwale in a poster that reportedly reads “Live with pride, die for the religion”.

Many cricket fans and social media users have as a result slammed Harbhajan for the story. He is yet to either address the controversy.

The Indian Army carried out Operation Blue Star in 1984 between June 1 and June 8. Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India, had ordered the military operation to flush out Sikh terrorists including Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, who were accumulating weapons inside the premises of the Golden Temple.

Meanwhile, several visuals came out from the Golden Temple on Sunday where the posters of Bhindranwale and Khalistani flags were seen during an event marking the 37th anniversary of the operation.
